The aim of this study was to compare the orthopaedic and ophthalmologic outcomes of patients with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease treated by a new intramedullary nail. Nineteen hips (19 patients) with Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, who were treated with a new intramedullary nail with an acetabular bone window from March 2011 to February 2013, were evaluated. The mean follow-up period was 28.2 months. The function of hips was assessed using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association hip joint evaluation scoring system. Radiologic evaluation was performed to determine the status of the Legg-Calvé-Perthes lesion in the affected hips. The average age at surgery was 11.6 years and the mean follow-up period was 28.2 months. The mean Japan Orthopaedic Association hip joint evaluation score at final follow-up was 86.7. The mean time to recovery of the contralateral hip was 19.7 months. Of the 19 patients, 16 were followed for more than 2 years and the mean Japan Orthopaedic Association hip joint evaluation score for the contralateral hip was 93.3.
